Designing Around Your Figure
The most practical advantage of OC cosplay: you design the character to suit your actual figure. For large-busted or augmented cosplayers, this means designing a bodice or armor piece that fits correctly from the start rather than requiring extensive modification. Your OC can have whatever proportions and design elements showcase your figure most effectively — a fantasy character with a corseted bodice and flowing skirt, a sci-fi character with structured armor, an historical character with a period-accurate silhouette built for your measurements.
Creating a Consistent Visual Identity
A strong OC design has: a coherent color palette (typically 3–4 colors in consistent proportion); a silhouette that reads clearly at a distance; identifying accessories or symbols that function as character signature; and a clear genre or aesthetic that provides context. Sketch the character from front, back, and side before beginning construction — you'll make better construction decisions with a clear reference for what you're building.
Presenting an OC at Conventions
Original characters aren't instantly recognized, which changes the convention experience — you'll explain your character rather than be recognized. This is also an opportunity: people who approach you to ask about your OC are genuinely curious, and the interaction is often more meaningful than a quick photo request for a recognized character. Carry a small card or have a social handle handy to share with people who want to follow your character's ongoing development.
